Iceland Eruptions : Grimsvotn Volcano Erupts

Just after the  Judgement Day, May 21, 2011 comes the news of Icelandic Volcanic eruption. And the news has created sort of a rage across the globe!

The current status indicates that Iceland's most active volcano, Gromsvotn, has started erupting - just over a year after another eruption on the North Atlantic Iceland put a stop to European Air Traffic for days.

Iceland's Meteorological office has confirmed that the eruptions begun accompanied by a series of minor earthquakes. The volcano lies under the VatnaJokull glacier in Iceland. The Volcanic smoke plumes were reported to be seen rising 12 miles into the sky from the volcano.

The eruption has resulted in a Ban being imposed on local flights, as the officials believe that the ash from the volcano could cause aircraft engines to fail, and that proximity to an erupting volcano might cause chaos among travellers.

The ban has been imposed on an area of 120 nautical miles (222KM) around Grinsvotn.

Sparsely populated Iceland is one of the world's most Volcanically active country, but due to low population density, the eruptions rarely cause any deaths.

The Grimcvotn Volcano had also erupted in 93, 96 and 98, eruption ranging from days to several weeks.
